Plus Sized.

The fashion industry has recently decided that an American size 6 (UK size 10) is plus-sized. Some very fit and healthy people at a cross fit competition were asked about their thoughts on this and about the message the media is sending.

I’m a UK size 10 - and I’m underweight. How is this now categorized as plus sized? Why does it even need a category? I’m perfectly healthy and if I asked people to describe my body type, I’m positive no one would say I was “plus-sized”. This sends a terrible message, because for many people plus-sized is synonymous with fat and obese, which evidently is not the case.

Healthy and happy should be the ideal, which is what the people interviewed are.

It just makes me sad that there’s now even more pressure from the media in a world where body confidence is so rare.

(Everyone interviewed stressed the importance of “Health and Fitness” and NOT just body size. This is not a Big vs. Small battle.)

My size seems to fluctuate so much between brands of clothes and my top to my bottom, etc, that I can’t identify myself as an 8 or 6 or 10, and that’s why I’ve set my weight goals by fitness level instead of numbers on a scale or numbers on a tag. I’m training my body for the hiking trip I have planned this summer, and if I can be a healthier, stronger woman without losing the inches around my hips, then I’m fine with that. I think what’s sad about this video is that some women (who are strong and healthy and have a healthy body image and self-esteem) are still upset about being called “plus-size”.
